Leaping Bleachers in a Single Bound – The Red Sheet by Mia Kerrick #blogtour #giveaway @bookienookie

The Red Sheet by Mia Kerick

Description:

One October morning, high school junior Bryan Dennison wakes up a different person—helpful, generous, and chivalrous—a person whose new admirable qualities he doesn’t recognize. Stranger still is the urge to tie a red sheet around his neck like a cape.
Bryan soon realizes this compulsion to wear a red cape is accompanied by more unusual behavior. He can’t hold back from retrieving kittens from tall trees, helping little old ladies cross busy streets, and defending innocence anywhere he finds it.

Shockingly, at school, he realizes he used to be a bully. He’s attracted to the former victim of his bullying, Scott Beckett, though he has no memory of Scott from before “the change.” Where he’d been lazy in academics, overly aggressive in sports, and socially insecure, he’s a new person. And although he can recall behaving egotistically, he cannot remember his motivations.

Everyone, from his mother to his teachers to his “superjock” former pals, is shocked by his dramatic transformation. However, Scott Beckett is not impressed by Bryan’s newfound virtue. And convincing Scott he’s genuinely changed and improved, hopefully gaining Scott’s trust and maybe even his love, becomes Bryan’s obsession.

Overall
4
Adorable coming of age story about a jock who miraculously changes from a bully to a hero overnight.
Fantasy World
5
You'll definitely feel like you're in high school again. There are also some really great scenes like the cafeteria flash mob which are FABULOUS!
Tingle
1
This is a very clean young adult book. There are some allusions to male/male sexual activity, and there is some attempted non-consensual contact.
Characters
5
Bryan doesn't even know why he does the things he's doing, and it's fun to figure it out with him. Scott stands up for himself admirably for his age. The rest of the supporting cast is an enjoyable band of misfits with whom you'll wish you had gone to school. I want to be the little old lady BADLY.
Story
3
Prologue is a bit long. Way too many parenthesis. It was a bit too spiritual for me, and there are unsubtle hints about Bryan's memory loss being caused by divine intervention.

Summary
The Red Sheet by Mia Kerrick is slightly precious for adult readers, but I encourage you to take a chance and read it. I shit you not, this book is a bundle of fantasy high school fun reminiscent of “Glee”. It will remove more years from your face than Oil of Olay, and you'll find yourself smiling for no reason at all. This is not my usual type of book at all, but I had a blast. Yes, some of the characters are stereotypes, and there was no explicit action, but it was still a joy to read. Wearing a red sheet is not required while reading this book, but it is encouraged.

The 190 pages fly by so the book feels shorter than it is. The ebook price of $5.79 is a bit steep for the page count, so I recommend buying it on sale or asking for it as a gift.

About the Author:

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five non-pedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

My themes I always write about:

Sweetness. Unconventional love, tortured/damaged heroes - only love can save them.

Holy Shit! The Kid is All Grown Up - “The Art of Breathing” by T.J. Klune

Book Scorecard

**Stars**

Overall
4
The Kid is all grown up now, and this is his story. It's not always easy, and that's good because real life rarely is.
Fantasy World
4
Seafare is still a charming town. College scenes are a bit unreal and lack detail. The trip to Arizona is outrageous!
Tingle
4
Poor Ty is kept a virgin for way too long. Most sex scenes are more humorous than hot.
Characters
3
Ty isn't as clever as he used to be; in fact he's gotten down right dumb. Not enough Bear and Otter time! Secondary characters are delightful.
Story
5
Love what T.J.Klune did with Ty's path through life! Being a smart kid doesn't mean their adult path is always easy or smooth. Sometimes being too smart too young is a detriment.

Summary
The Art of Breathing” by T.J.Klune continues the story started in “Bear, Otter, and the Kid”. These characters are familiar friends with whom we have shared many emotional moments. Finally it's The Kid's turn for his story. T.J.Klune does a wonderful job of writing a believable plot for Ty's life which doesn't end in some fairy tale of him heading the United Nations. Life is rarely that easy, especially for those who are child prodigies. The only thing I would have preferred is more page time for Dominic, and more about his point of view. I liked the road trip to visit some favorite characters in Arizona from “Tell Me It's Real”, but missed Otter and Bear. They were mainly in the background.

The Art of Breathing” is not recommended as a stand alone book. You have to read the first two books in the series to truly understand the other characters, and the trauma which they have experienced. This book is more than worth the $5.79 ebook price, and in fact buying the entire series is a worthy investment.

Gay Princess Goes to College - “Love Lessons” by Heidi Cullinan

Book Scorecard

**Stars**

Overall
4
Smartly written, new adult story with interesting commentary on higher education, and lip service LGBT support. The love story isn't quite as engaging as usual for Heidi Cullinan, but still very readable.
Fantasy World
4
Hope College is all too real from the institutional buildings to the cramped dorms.
Tingle
3
Were these guys wearing promise rings? Minimal action, and very sweet when they do get down to it.
Characters
4
Kelly is a Disney Princess full of fairy tale dreams. Great concept, but found him a bit irritating. Walter is a Tootsie Pop – hard on the outside with a sweet, gooey interior. I liked him better when he was on the prowl. Good secondary characters.
Story
5
Complex story with subplots which really add to overall plot. Not trite like so many college or new adult stories.

Summary
"Love Lessons” by Heidi Cullinan goes down the well trodden path of college students becoming adults, and learning to live their own lives. The characters and plots are familiar, but well executed by the author. The interesting twist added is the setting itself in which a supposed haven for LGBT students doesn't quite live up to it's billing. Having paid thousands of dollars to a university which treated me more like a toddler than an adult, I found a lot of familiar territory.

Heidi Cullinan isn't at the top of her game with this book, but it's definitely still worth adding to your TBR list. It's more than worth the $4.24 in entertainment value.

Just call her Frigid & Hyde...

In the old English town of Foxfield, Caitlyn McCoe's doing a crap job of Not Being Touched. Her uni friends are too busy posing on Instagram to notice how a hug makes her cringe, but no matter--she's knee-deep in denial. Anyway, between combat classes, baking binges, digital marketing seminars and her job at the gym, there's no time to mull over the root of the problem: Dominic, the ex who puts the "oh God, please go away," in "dysfunctional."
Then HE shows up at the gym: the boxer. Fist Candy. The Bonfire Boy. From afar, he's beautifully nameless, and Cait lets herself want him because he's safe...until it turns out he's Art Lyons, the gym's new sports massage therapist and her co-worker. A co-worker who makes her long to be touched.
Art likes Cait. She likes him. It should be simple, but it never is, not now Dominic's crawling out of the woodwork and stirring everything the wrong way. And Cait's sister, Mills, keeps bugging her to read a book about a lighthouse and dead seagulls that might just be harbouring its own twisted message--if she can get over the puns.
So when Art turns out to have secrets of his own--four of them etched on to his skin in a scratched tattoo--it all feels like a bit much. Maybe touch is overrated. Maybe Cait's not built for it. But God, she wants to be. She wants him and this slow, slow burn...

Author Bio

Lucy V. Morgan writes sharp contemporary fiction, usually with a liberal splatter of filth. She is the author of the dark, hot KNIVES & FLOWERS duo and the standalones TWISTED SUMMER, BEAUTIFUL MESS and THE GENTLEMAN HAS LEFT THE BUILDING.
In her new adult parody, TOUSLE ME, Lucy pays homage to her genre in the best way she knows how: by mocking it mercilessly.
Lucy lives in England, where she also works as an editor. She spends her spare time consuming lebkuchen, working through her TBR pile, and pretending she's an urban fantasy heroine in body combat classes. Her new dark romantic novel, VIOLETTA, will release in September 2014.
She shares lots of teasers on Facebook, so you should look her up right this minute, really, shouldn't you?

Overall
3
Paranormal romance between a druid and a werewolf flourishes via a dream connection. Evil vampires and dark mages pursue the druid, and leave him little time for wooing.
Fantasy World
3
Edenton is a special town where paranormal creatures of many types have banded together to form a very special community.
Tingle
3
I wish I had dreams like these!
Characters
3
Many characters carried over from previous installments, and I had a hard time keeping them all straight. The main characters were good, but I felt I was more told what they were, than shown.
Story
3
The story jumps around a bit with flashbacks and dream visits. It also touches on other characters with which I wasn't familiar. I was working to keep up with it all, instead of being able to sit back and revel in the wedding like I wanted to.

Summary
Breaking Free by Brandy Rivers is a good book, but it didn't grab me by the collar and shake me. I think the difference is I started the series with this book instead of with In Too Deep which is book 1 in the Others of Edenton series. I haven't had five books to build a relationship with these characters and this world. The readers who have followed the series absolutely love this book, and have obviously been waiting for this installment. I'm going to go back and start with the first book, and I think it's very likely my rating will add a few more stars. Others may be able to jump in with Breaking Free and enjoy Edenton better than I could, but I really recommend not reading this as a stand alone book. I think you'll get a lot more enjoyment out of Breaking Free if you read the rest of the series first.

Romantic couple in a hotel room

 BOOK EXCERPT

The moon shone bright over a crystal clear lake. Thousands of stars were reflected, like floating diamonds sparkling. The breeze blew gently through red cedar, pine, and maple. The clean mountain air reminded him of camping with his family when he was a boy. It had been so long since he had the liberty, and desire, to enjoy nature. The water called to Devlin. Carefully, without a sound, he pulled the clothes from his body and placed them on the stump beside him. With a slow breath, he walked into the gentle ripples, creating larger crests of his own. Warm water greeted him. He dove under, swimming deeper. A splash caught Devlin’s attention. He broke the surface to find nothing, and no one. Closing his eyes, he reached out with his senses. A lone werewolf was close. Panic flared through him, and he started for the shore, but a woman surfaced before him. A slow smile spread on her face when he flailed back, splashing her in his surprise. “Your heart’s pounding.” Amusement sparkled in her pale blue topaz eyes as she placed one small hand over his chest. Warmth washed through him offering a calm he couldn’t remember ever feeling. Yet, he was terrified the Dales were tracking him. A dream, nothing more than a dream. They can’t find me, he reminded himself. “You startled me,” Devlin replied. “Hmm.” Her foot brushed against his calf, sending a shiver through his entire body. She tapped her finger to her chin. “You remind me of someone, but I can’t figure out who.” Intrigued, and certainly heading toward aroused, he asked, “What makes you say that?” One corner of her shiny pink mouth lifted impishly. “Don’t know, but you do.” Her voice had taken on a husky purr which effectively made his blood pump faster. A dream, just a dream, he told himself. Then he did something bold, something he hadn’t done in so long he was sure he’d fail, even in a fantasy. “What’s a sweet little wolf like you doing out here all alone?” Her giggle was melodic as her already dazzling eyes lit up. “Looking for love in all the wrong places.” As if on cue, his resistance broke. Her tiny waist fit perfectly in his hands, her hips flared in a way that made him groan. Devlin propelled them closer to the shore, until his feet touched bottom. Before he could make his move, her legs locked around his hips and her fingers caressed up his shoulder and neck to delve into his hair. She grazed her lips over his. Afraid to take things too far, he slid his hands up her back, pressing her full breasts against his chest. Needing more of her taste, he deepened their kiss. Devlin felt more alive than he could remember. A dream, just a blasted dream, his brain chimed in. The knowledge didn’t stop him from sweeping his tongue into her mouth when she opened to him. Her body undulated in tune with his, and her heated core slid against his hardened length. The urge to bury himself in her was too much. Pulling back, he panted, “Your name? Need your name, Precious.” “Precious?” She licked her lips as she stared back at him with something like awe in her big blue eyes. He tipped his forehead to hers and breathed in her wild but seductive scent. “You’ve set me free of my old life. You’ve given me something to look forward to.” He didn’t know where the words came from, but he didn’t dare take them back. They felt right. “Jamie Abrams. You better come to me.” There was a command hidden in her sweet sassy voice, one he truly wanted to obey. “I’ll be waiting.” He nodded, rolling her name through his head like a fine wine over his tongue.
