BOOK SYNOPSIS

They say that dreams can come true, but as a dreamwalker, Devlin had yet to experience anything but nightmares. Then again, the druid had been held by sadistic vampires and dark mages for twenty years, forced to do their bidding. Newly escaped, he stumbles upon a dreamrealm where he can’t resist a little werewolf.
Jamie just wants someone to call her own. She feels like she’s been waiting for an awfully long time, when a man who teases her memory begins to visit her while she’s dreaming. From the moment she feels his turmoil, she’s drawn in, wanting nothing more than to heal his broken soul.
Before Devlin can decide what to do, he has to make a trip to Edenton. His first goal is to make sure someone who can’t remember him is safe and happy. The little werewolf of his dreams happens to live there, and she’s even more irresistible in real life.
When you’ve been taught all your life to run, what will make you change? Can Jamie convince her mate to stay and fight? Will he risk everything to have what he needs? Or run to save them all?

**Stars**

Overall
3
Paranormal romance between a druid and a werewolf flourishes via a dream connection. Evil vampires and dark mages pursue the druid, and leave him little time for wooing.
Fantasy World
3
Edenton is a special town where paranormal creatures of many types have banded together to form a very special community.
Tingle
3
I wish I had dreams like these!
Characters
3
Many characters carried over from previous installments, and I had a hard time keeping them all straight. The main characters were good, but I felt I was more told what they were, than shown.
Story
3
The story jumps around a bit with flashbacks and dream visits. It also touches on other characters with which I wasn't familiar. I was working to keep up with it all, instead of being able to sit back and revel in the wedding like I wanted to.

Summary
Breaking Free by Brandy Rivers is a good book, but it didn't grab me by the collar and shake me. I think the difference is I started the series with this book instead of with In Too Deep which is book 1 in the Others of Edenton series. I haven't had five books to build a relationship with these characters and this world. The readers who have followed the series absolutely love this book, and have obviously been waiting for this installment. I'm going to go back and start with the first book, and I think it's very likely my rating will add a few more stars. Others may be able to jump in with Breaking Free and enjoy Edenton better than I could, but I really recommend not reading this as a stand alone book. I think you'll get a lot more enjoyment out of Breaking Free if you read the rest of the series first.

 BOOK EXCERPT

The moon shone bright over a crystal clear lake. Thousands of stars were reflected, like floating diamonds sparkling. The breeze blew gently through red cedar, pine, and maple. The clean mountain air reminded him of camping with his family when he was a boy. It had been so long since he had the liberty, and desire, to enjoy nature. The water called to Devlin. Carefully, without a sound, he pulled the clothes from his body and placed them on the stump beside him. With a slow breath, he walked into the gentle ripples, creating larger crests of his own. Warm water greeted him. He dove under, swimming deeper. A splash caught Devlin’s attention. He broke the surface to find nothing, and no one. Closing his eyes, he reached out with his senses. A lone werewolf was close. Panic flared through him, and he started for the shore, but a woman surfaced before him. A slow smile spread on her face when he flailed back, splashing her in his surprise. “Your heart’s pounding.” Amusement sparkled in her pale blue topaz eyes as she placed one small hand over his chest. Warmth washed through him offering a calm he couldn’t remember ever feeling. Yet, he was terrified the Dales were tracking him. A dream, nothing more than a dream. They can’t find me, he reminded himself. “You startled me,” Devlin replied. “Hmm.” Her foot brushed against his calf, sending a shiver through his entire body. She tapped her finger to her chin. “You remind me of someone, but I can’t figure out who.” Intrigued, and certainly heading toward aroused, he asked, “What makes you say that?” One corner of her shiny pink mouth lifted impishly. “Don’t know, but you do.” Her voice had taken on a husky purr which effectively made his blood pump faster. A dream, just a dream, he told himself. Then he did something bold, something he hadn’t done in so long he was sure he’d fail, even in a fantasy. “What’s a sweet little wolf like you doing out here all alone?” Her giggle was melodic as her already dazzling eyes lit up. “Looking for love in all the wrong places.” As if on cue, his resistance broke. Her tiny waist fit perfectly in his hands, her hips flared in a way that made him groan. Devlin propelled them closer to the shore, until his feet touched bottom. Before he could make his move, her legs locked around his hips and her fingers caressed up his shoulder and neck to delve into his hair. She grazed her lips over his. Afraid to take things too far, he slid his hands up her back, pressing her full breasts against his chest. Needing more of her taste, he deepened their kiss. Devlin felt more alive than he could remember. A dream, just a blasted dream, his brain chimed in. The knowledge didn’t stop him from sweeping his tongue into her mouth when she opened to him. Her body undulated in tune with his, and her heated core slid against his hardened length. The urge to bury himself in her was too much. Pulling back, he panted, “Your name? Need your name, Precious.” “Precious?” She licked her lips as she stared back at him with something like awe in her big blue eyes. He tipped his forehead to hers and breathed in her wild but seductive scent. “You’ve set me free of my old life. You’ve given me something to look forward to.” He didn’t know where the words came from, but he didn’t dare take them back. They felt right. “Jamie Abrams. You better come to me.” There was a command hidden in her sweet sassy voice, one he truly wanted to obey. “I’ll be waiting.” He nodded, rolling her name through his head like a fine wine over his tongue.

Murder and Mayhem Are Gold - "Cross & Crown" (Sidewinder #2) by @abigailroux #review @RiptideBooks

Book Scorecard

**Stars**

Overall
4
A planned romantic weekend goes to hell when Nick is called in to solve a murder. Kelly gets sucked into the chase, and they both find romance taking a backseat to adventure.
Fantasy World
5
The gritty streets of Boston are the perfect host to all the action.
Tingle
4
These boys bought the economy size of lube for your enjoyment.
Characters
4
Old favorites such as Julian Cross join Nick and Kelly along with some notable newbies.
Story
3
Fun adventure, but lacks spark. Plot elements are movie clichés.

Summary
"Cross & Crown” by Abigail Roux is one part “Memento” and two parts “National Treasure”. Nick and Kelley's long distance relationship has had many obstacles, but never more so than now. Nick's dedication to his job sucks them into a murder mystery which takes the reader on a tour of American Revolutionary history. Plot elements such as the amnesiac witness, the innocent hostage, and the race against time seem overly familiar. It's a fun romp, but doesn't inspire the same level of devotion I have for most Abigail Roux books.

The Sidewinder series is worth reading even at $7 for 207 pages, but it still comes in second to the Cut & Run series. The romance between Nick and Kelley is good, but not as compelling as Ty and Zane. This book won't keep you up all night, and sometimes that's a good thing.

Liam “Hunter” Blake hates the Reapers MC. Born and raised a Devil’s Jack, he knows his duty. He’ll defend his club from their oldest enemies—the Reapers—using whatever weapons he can find. Em has lived her entire life in the shadow of the Reapers. Her overprotective father, Picnic, is the club’s president. The last time she had a boyfriend, Picnic shot him. Overall
4
Another great book in a marvelous series. Em and Liam are the Romeo and Juliet of the MC World. Violence is wonderfully balanced with humor.
Fantasy World
5
MC world comes to life in complete, depraved detail. Visiting again is an requisite pleasure.
Tingle
4
Heroine's virginity drags on forever, then ends in a crappy way. Debauched parties add a lot of zing, and provide a nice contrast.
Characters
4
Em deserves her own story. Family interaction is gold. Liam loves a strong woman who brings her own gun to a relationship. Very brief appearances from previous, favorite characters.
Story
3
Beginning is choppy as author tries to bring readers up to speed with bits from previous books. Captivity section drags. Story jumps around.

Summary
We've visited the Reapers before in “Reaper's Property” and “Reaper's Legacy”. Love isn't any easier this time around, and guns/violence are a given. “Devil's Game” by Joanna Wylde takes place in a rough, blue collar world and the characters often find themselves on the wrong side of the law. People still fall in love though, even when it's inconvenient. Em has been protected within an inch of her life, and she's about to break free in a big way. Liam is from a rival MC (motorcycle club), and he's torn between his instructions to use Em as a pawn and a desperate need to bang her.

Nobody does biker romance like Joanna Wylde. Get ready to one click it and stay up all night.

Harry Dresden is still The Man! – "Skin Game" by Jim Butcher

Book Scorecard

**Stars**

Overall
5
Delicious, supernatural robbery caper with Harry Dresden stuck in the middle of a life or death situation like usual. Jim Butcher just keeps getting better.
Fantasy World
5
A trip to hell has never been so much fun or had so many glorious details.
Tingle
N/A
Nada. Not expected. 100% Urban Fantasy
Characters
5
Includes an all star cast from previous books as well as some delightful newbies. I love what Jim Butcher did with Hades.
Story
5
Artfully integrates multiple storylines and continues plot arcs from previous books. Pacing is edge of your seat as always.

Summary
Skin Game” by Jim Butcher is “League of Extraordinary Gentleman” meets “Ocean's 11”. Harry Dresden's life is always complicated, and he's always stuck between a rock and a hard place. This time he gets stuck on a team of villains who are planning the greatest robbery of all time. They plan to make off with the cream of Hades' (yes, the Greek God Hades) treasure vault. The only question is which of them will manage to survive the endeavor, if any.

This is the 15th book in the Harry Dresden series and is absolutely not a stand alone read. You need to commit to Harry all the way, just like marriage. Even though you won't get a diamond ring, it's still worth it. I gobbled down all 454 pages in 2 days. That's how I differentiate a 5 star book from a 4 star book. For 5 stars I need to not care how much it costs. Screw groceries. I'll live on Ramen noodles for the month just to afford the book. I also have to be so engrossed I don't even realize I've stayed up all night reading it until dawn peaks through the window. “Skin Game” rates a blazing 5 stars on my scale.
